Located a short 150 metre walk
from the villa is the home of Hihi wines. This new
wine label has already received awards and critical
acclaim for its 2004 red wines including a very
drinkable Pinotage. In 2006 a small winery was
established producing 500 cases of wine including
Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Rosé, Pinotage, Merlot
and Cabernet Franc.
Philosophy
Hihi Wines is a small boutique winery focused on
providing quality wines at a reasonable price.
Background

Andrew Nimmo is the owner, red winemaker,
viticulturalist and manager of the vineyard and
winery at 53 Bond Road, Ormond. Andrew made his
first wines whilst a student at Tairawhiti
Polytechnic in Gisborne during 2002/2003. His first
wine, a 2003 Pinotage, gained a Bronze medal at
Bragato wines awards in 2004. Based upon this
success he decided to start Hihi wines making a
Pinotage and a Cabernet Sauvignon blend during 2004
vintage. |
In August 2004 Hihi wines purchased a vineyard in
Ormond, planted in Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer
grapes. The majority of these grapes are sold under
contract to Nobilo wine group, with a small quantity
now being made into wine for the Hihi label. During
2005 land was cleared to make way for a new
plantings of a trail block of Spanish (Tempranillo)
and Italian (Barbera, Dolcetto) varieties. Further
plantings of red varieties (Nebbiolo, Syrah and
Malbec) are planned for October 2006.
In March 2006 a small winery was established on-site
producing three red wines, Pinotage, Merlot,
Cabernet Franc plus Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and
Rosé. The whites and rosé are due to be released in
October 2006, whilst the reds will be released in
April/May 2007. |

Wines

The only two wines so far released under the Hihi
label are as follows.
Pinotage 2004 – Bronze Medal, Air New Zealand Wine
Awards 2005. Critical acclaim from wine writers
including Joelle Thomson, Jane Skilton and Timothy
Giles. This wine is now available in a number of
good wine retailers all over the country.
Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Pinotage 2004 –
Bronze Medal, Bragato Wine Awards 2005. Sold out (in
10 days after release!). |
